The services work in such a way Uganda currently has about 70 anaesthesia specialists providing care with more than 75% working in the capital, Kampala. The majority of the anaesthesia service for the 43 million Ugandans is supplied by non-physician anaesthetists who find themselves providing care for complex and time-bound surgeries. Often, these providers would contact individual anesthesiologists for guidance before or during anaesthesia care. However, this was expensive for the providers, and the availability of the specialist would not be assured. 

Established in 2021 in an effort to bridge the gaps in access to specialists and timely clinical discourse, the Association of Anesthesiologists of Uganda partnered with the Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia to establish a “mobile” call centre, developed by local service providers and managed by Ugandan anaesthesia and critical care specialists. The National Anesthesia Phone Platform (aka Anesthesia and Critical care call centre, or simply anaesthesia call centre) provides real-time, remote technical (clinical and academic) assistance and mentorship to anaesthesia providers, critical care providers and other health care providers working in high acuity areas that doctor anaesthetists are available 24/7 to receive your phone call and provide clinical and educational support in real-time. You do not incur any expenses since the call is toll-free.
